Cell Junctions in Epithelial Tissue

Cell junctions are crucial for maintaining the integrity and functionality of epithelial tissues. The three main types include:

Tight Junctions: Interlocking membrane proteins bind the lipid portions of adjacent plasma membranes, preventing the passage of water and ions.
Gap Junctions: Formed by connexons, these narrow passageways allow small molecules and ions to pass between cells.
Desmosomes: Strong connections made of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) and proteoglycans that resist stretching and twisting.

Epithelial Cell Classifications
