Relationship with Space in Classical Mechanics: In classical mechanics, space and time are deeply related concepts, often expressed as "space is time and time is space." This implies that time is required to cover the space between two points.
Practical Example: The statement "Lagos to Ibadan is 1 hour 30 minutes" illustrates this relationship, meaning 1 hour 30 minutes is the time required to travel the space between Lagos and Ibadan.
Mathematical Relationship: This relationship is formalized through basic kinematic equations:
- Speed = \frac{Distance}{Time} (Equation 1)
- Distance = Speed \times Time (Equation 2)
These equations demonstrate how knowing the speed of an object allows for the calculation of the time it takes to cover a certain distance, thereby linking space to time in mechanical contexts.

The Concept of Space

The term 'Space' carries multiple meanings depending on the context, but in physics, it refers to a fundamental aspect of the universe.

General Definition: Space is defined as a boundless, three-dimensional (3-D) extent in which objects can occupy positions and where events occur. It possesses relative position and direction. It can also refer to the unlimited 3-D expanse containing all material objects.
Astronomical Definition: In astronomy, space specifically refers to the region beyond Earth's atmosphere, encompassing the solar system, stars, galaxies, and the entire universe.
Relational Definition: Space can also be defined as a region or interval between two points, objects, or events. When discussing the "length of a space between two points," it implies distance.
Dimension: Space has the dimension of length or distance, typically measured in meters (m).
Representation: Space is represented using spatial coordinate systems, which can be one-dimensional (1-D), two-dimensional (2-D), or three-dimensional (3-D). The Cartesian coordinate system (e.g., xyz plane) is a common example used as a reference frame to represent space.

Reference Frames

A Reference Frame is an abstract coordinate system coupled with a set of physical reference points. These elements uniquely fix the coordinate system and standardize measurements within that frame.

Figure 1 illustrates both a static 1-D coordinate system and a moving 1-D reference frame. This diagram depicts a "Moving Frame" with velocity V relative to a "Static frame." Inside the moving frame, there are objects A and B. Outside, in the static frame, there is object C.

- To object A (within the moving frame), object B (also within the moving frame) appears static, even though the entire container (the moving reference frame) is moving at a constant velocity V.
- To object C (in the static frame), object B (in the moving frame) is observed to be moving with velocity V in the positive x-direction.

Types of Reference Frames

  - A car that is accelerating or decelerating.
- Implication: An occupant inside such an accelerating car will experience a change of state, feeling as if an external force is acting upon them (e.g., being pushed to the side when turning).

Event Specification: An event is specified as a point on this (x, y, z, t) coordinate system.
Events at the Same Time, Different Locations:
- Event A occurs at location P1 and time t1.
- Event B occurs at location P2 and time t1.
- This illustrates two distinct events happening simultaneously but at different points in space.
Events at the Same Location, Different Times:
- Event A occurs at location P1 and time t1.
- Event C occurs at location P1 but at a later time t2.

Lorentz Transformations: Contraction and Dilation in Relativity

When applying the formulae, ensure that the x and t values being used correspond to a specific, identifiable event.
Problem-Solving Methodology:
1. Identify Frame S: Choose one of the reference frames in the problem and designate it as frame S. It is often simplest to select the frame for which the most information is provided or known.
2. Identify Frame S': Identify the other reference frame and designate it as S'. This frame is typically chosen as the one in which the desired information or unknown quantities are to be determined.
3. Determine Relative Velocity (V): Ascertain the velocity (V) of frame S' relative to frame S. This velocity is a crucial parameter in the Lorentz transformation formulae. It is important to define the x-direction such that this velocity V is either purely in the positive or negative x-direction for simplified calculations.
4. Define Relevant Events and Coordinates:
