This submodule specifically addresses autobiographical memory, which refers to our memory for personal life events. In this context, we will examine three key concepts: flashbulb memories, the reminiscence bump, and the effect of depression on autobiographical memory. By the end of this submodule, you should be able to describe various factors influencing autobiographical memory.

Flashbulb Memories

Flashbulb memories are vivid and detailed recollections of significant or dramatic events. For many individuals, this might include personal experiences such as the moment they first heard about the 9/11 attacks, or the death of a public figure like Princess Diana. For example, one might vividly recall where they were and with whom when they learned of these events.

Brown and Kulik proposed that there is a unique mechanism in the brain responsible for encoding these flashbulb memories. Despite this theory, evidence suggests that flashbulb memories are surprisingly susceptible to the same processes of forgetting and distortion as ordinary memories. Interestingly, individuals often exhibit high confidence in their flashbulb memories, a phenomenon explored by Rimmele and colleagues. They indicated that strong memory recall of the event's context can inflate our confidence regarding the entire memory.

The Reminiscence Bump

This intriguing phenomenon highlights that older adults often recall a disproportionately high number of memories from their adolescence and early adulthood. There are two primary types of line-ups: simultaneous and sequential. In simultaneous line-ups, witnesses view all suspects at once, while in sequential line-ups, suspects are viewed one at a time. Research indicates that simultaneous line-ups yield a slightly higher correct identification rate of culprits, whereas sequential line-ups lead to fewer false identifications when the real perpetrator is absent. Wells and colleagues found that allowing witnesses to express uncertainty about identifications can further reduce misidentifications.

Factors Influencing Identification

Several factors can distort eyewitness identification: the timing of the crime, the individual's mood, stress levels during the event, and the weapon focus effect. The weapon focus effect indicates that witnesses may concentrate on the weapon during a violent crime, impairing their ability to recall other significant details about the perpetrator. This effect is magnified when the weapon is unexpected. Research by Pickel further confirmed that unexpected weapons lead to diminished recall accuracy.

Cognitive Biases

Knowledge-rich problems require specialized expertise for resolution, while knowledge-lean problems do not necessitate deep prior knowledge. Most psychological research tends to focus on knowledge-lean problems to minimize individual differences and emphasize cognitive strategies.

Heuristics in Problem Solving

Newell and Simon's means-end analysis encourages breaking down problems into subgoals to reduce the gap between the current state and the desired outcome. However, this approach can sometimes hinder performance, particularly when goal-related information cloud decision-making processes.

Analogical Reasoning

Another approach involves analogical reasoning, where individuals draw on similarities from past experiences to tackle new problems. Despite its advantages, studies pointed out that people often neglect to use analogies effectively when facing novel challenges.

Expertise and Deliberate Practice
