Installation of Pterodactyl Panel and Wings

Overview

This document details the installation process of the Pterodactyl Panel (version 1.11.10) and Wings (version 1.11.13) on an Ubuntu 22.04 server. This process includes setting up security configurations, creating a MySQL database, and configuring several components for successful operation.

Initial Setup

The installation begins by retrieving necessary release information for the Pterodactyl panel installation script, crafted by Vilhelm Prytz. The user is given a selection menu to choose the installation type (panel only, Wings only, or both), along with additional options for configurations.

Database Configuration

The installation script prompts the user to provide database credentials, including username (default: pterodactyl), database name (default: panel), and a password, which can be autogenerated. Users are asked to select their timezone and provide an email for Let's Encrypt certificates and initial admin account setup.

Selected Options:

Chosen to install both the panel and Wings on the same machine.
Timezone set to Europe/Stockholm.
Email addresses provided for admin account and SSL configuration.

Environment Configuration

The script allows automatic configuration of UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall) and enables HTTPS with Let's Encrypt.

UFW Configuration:

Ports allowed: SSH (22), HTTP (80), and HTTPS (443).

Let’s Encrypt Configuration:

Successfully verified DNS for provided FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) panel.323hosting.ovh, which is required for SSL certificate issuance. This includes:

Obtaining and configuring the SSL certificate.
Renewing an existing certificate successfully.

Installing Dependencies

Installation script checks for existing packages, specifically:

Uncomplicated Firewall (UFW)
Certbot for managing Let's Encrypt certificates
Web server components like Nginx
Database components including MariaDB and PHP

Any new necessary packages are automatically installed.

Composer Installation

The installation of Composer dependency manager is completed, which is vital for managing PHP packages required by the Pterodactyl panel.

Database and Migrations

The installation process includes the creation of the database and assigning privileges to the newly created user. After initializing the migrations, which run a series of SQL scripts to set up the database tablesd, the seeder script populates the essential tables with pre-defined data for different game nests and eggs:

Game nests include: Minecraft, Source Engine, and VoiceServers.

Seeder Updates:

Each egg gets created and associated records are inserted, ensuring that the panel has the necessary configurations to manage server instances for these games.

Wings Installation

The script proceeds to Wings installation, which includes downloading necessary components, installing Docker, and creating the settings for Wings. It checks the firewall settings again and does the following:

Allows incoming traffic to relevant ports for Wings.
Configures HTTPS using Let's Encrypt for the Wings service.
Sets various service configurations as per user input.

Post Installation

At the conclusion of the process, the script provides additional instructions related to completing the setup of Wings node with the provided panel address. The user is informed of the successful installations with relevant confirmations.

The panel is now accessible at the specified FQDN, allowing users to manage game servers effectively from the newly installed Pterodactyl Panel.
