Principles of American Democracy

The supreme law of the land in the United States is the Constitution. This foundational document not only establishes the framework for the government but also defines its powers and safeguards the basic rights of American citizens. The significance of the idea of self-government is encapsulated in the Constitution's opening three words: "We the People," highlighting that government derives its authority from the consent of the governed.

Amendments to the Constitution represent changes or additions to the original text, with the first ten amendments collectively known as the Bill of Rights. These amendments are fundamental in ensuring specific freedoms and rights for individuals, such as freedom of speech, religion, assembly, press, and the right to petition the government.

In total, the Constitution comprises twenty-seven amendments, reflecting the evolving nature of American society and governance.

System of Government

The U.S. government is divided into three branches: the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. This separation of powers is integral to the system of checks and balances, which prevents any one branch from gaining excessive power. The legislative branch, known as Congress, is responsible for creating federal laws and consists of two chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives.

There are one hundred U.S. Senators, each serving a six-year term, while the House of Representatives is composed of four hundred thirty-five voting members, with representatives elected to serve two-year terms. The Senate represents all the people of a state, while the number of Representatives per state is proportionate to its population.

The President leads the executive branch, serving a four-year term, and is the Commander in Chief of the military. In addition to signing bills into law, the President has the authority to veto legislation. The President's Cabinet, which includes heads of various departments such as Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense, advises the President on important matters.

The judicial branch interprets the law, with the Supreme Court being the highest court in the country. It reviews laws, resolves disputes, and ensures that legislation aligns with the Constitution.

Rights and Responsibilities

American citizens enjoy rights and freedoms that are protected by the Constitution. There are four amendments related to voting eligibility. For instance, citizens aged eighteen and over have the legal right to vote, and no taxes can be imposed as a prerequisite for voting. Responsibilities unique to American citizens include serving on a jury and voting in federal elections.

All individuals residing in the U.S. are entitled to rights such as freedom of expression, religion, and the right to assemble peacefully. Additionally, loyalty to the United States and its Constitution is affirmed through the Pledge of Allegiance. New citizens make a series of promises, including the commitment to defend the Constitution and obey its laws.

Citizens must be at least eighteen years old to vote for President. Participation in democracy can take various forms, including voting, joining political parties, and engaging in civic activities. The federal income tax deadline is typically April 15, and men are required to register for the Selective Service upon turning eighteen.

Colonists migrated to America seeking various freedoms, including political and religious liberty, and economic opportunities. Before European arrival, the land was inhabited by American Indians. The transatlantic slave trade forcibly brought Africans to America, who were sold into slavery.

Colonial resistance against British rule was fueled by grievances such as high taxation and lack of self-governance. The Declaration of Independence, authored primarily by Thomas Jefferson and adopted on July 4, 1776, officially announced the separation from Great Britain.

The U.S. Constitution was created during the Constitutional Convention in 1787, with support from figures like James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay, who wrote The Federalist Papers. George Washington, revered as the Father of Our Country, became the first President.

1800s

In 1803, the U.S. acquired the Louisiana Territory from France. Significant conflicts, including the Civil War, arose from issues like slavery and states’ rights. Abraham Lincoln’s leadership during this turbulent time was marked by the Emancipation Proclamation, which aimed to free enslaved individuals in the Confederacy.

Recent American History

In the 1900s, major wars shaped the country, such as World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Prominent Presidents during these periods included Woodrow Wilson during WWI and Franklin Roosevelt during the Great Depression and WWII. The Cold War era was characterized by a focus on combating communism, and the Civil Rights Movement fought against racial discrimination led by figures like Martin Luther King Jr.
