ADSL – an asymmetric line that shares the existing telephone line, capable of speeds up to 8 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream. This is the oldest variant of xDSL technology and is largely outdated.

HDSL – another symmetric line, achieving up to 4 Mbps using two pairs of twisted copper wires.

Understanding ADSL

Modulation Methods in ADSL

DMT (Discrete Multi-tone): This modulation method divides the entire frequency spectrum (0-1.1 MHz) into 255 sub-channels, each of 4.3125 kHz in width, with overlapping segments. Sub-channels 7-31 are reserved for upstream, while 32-255 are reserved for downstream. Each sub-channel is modulated independently using Amplitude Modulation.
VDTM (Vectored Discrete Multi-tone): Aimed at enhancing DMT by reducing crosstalk, this method can improve speeds over shorter distances.
