Weather conditions can change significantly even during a single day, yet overall patterns emerge across weeks or months, highlighting trends such as cool or warm days, windy or calm spells, and wet or dry conditions. Consequently, we categorize the year into distinct seasons, including winter, summer, and the rainy season. Additionally, understanding the diverse climatic regions of the world, particularly India's unique climate, is essential.

The Monsoon Climate of India

The term monsoon is derived from the Arabic word ‘mausim’, meaning season. It signifies the seasonal reversal of wind direction throughout the year. In Asia, particularly in the southern and southeastern regions, this type of climate is prevalent, including India. Although there is a unifying pattern in India's climate, significant regional variations exist that influence it, particularly concerning temperature and precipitation.

For instance, India experiences extreme summer temperatures, with some areas in the Rajasthan desert reaching up to 50°C, while cooler regions like Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir maintain an average of about 20°C. During winter, Drass may experience temperatures plummeting to minus 45°C, contrasting with milder conditions in Thiruvananthapuram at around 22°C. Latitude: The Tropic of Cancer bisects India, with half of the country lying in the tropical zone south of this line, while the rest resides in subtropical territories. Hence, India's climate exhibits characteristics typical of both tropical and subtropical climates.
Altitude: With the Himalayas averaging heights near 6,000 meters, they play a crucial role in influencing temperature. They prevent the frigid winds from Central Asia from affecting the subcontinent, resulting in milder winters compared to those in Central Asia.
Pressure and Winds: India's climate and weather conditions are guided by pressure systems, surface winds, upper air circulation, western cyclonic disturbances, and tropical cyclones. Northeasterly winds originating from subtropical high pressure carry little moisture, resulting in aridity; however, they contribute to monsoon patterns that bring substantial rainfall.

4. Retreating Monsoon (Transition Season)

This period, occurring in October-November, features transitions from wet conditions to dry winter. High-pressure systems develop, leading to the withdrawal of monsoon winds and potentially resulting in cyclonic disturbances that cause considerable rainfall along certain coastal regions.

Rainfall Distribution

India exhibits varied rainfall distribution, with western coastal regions and northeastern India receiving over 400 cm annually, while areas in Rajasthan and adjoining states see less than 60 cm. The variability in annual rainfall can lead to extremes, with flood-prone areas experiencing severe inundation in contrast to drought-affected regions.
