Overview of Electrochemistry

Electrochemistry explores how electron transfer in redox reactions can generate electricity or cause chemical changes. Changes in an atom's oxidation state alter its physical and chemical properties, such as state, color, or reactivity.

The Atomic Theory: Its Place in Chemistry

Everything is composed of atoms, which consist of protons (+ charge), electrons (- charge), and neutrons (neutral). Electron transfer is fundamental to chemical reactions, leading to changes in substances.

Electrochemical Reactions

Oxidation and Reduction

Oxidation: Process where electrons are removed from an atom, making it more positive.
Reduction: Process where an atom gains electrons, making it more negative.
These processes alter an atom's charge and properties, often visibly through color changes.
Redox Reactions: Involve simultaneous oxidation and reduction, where electrons are transferred from one atom to another.

Terminology

Oxidizing Agent: A substance that causes oxidation by accepting electrons (gets reduced).
Reducing Agent: A substance that causes reduction by losing electrons (gets oxidized).
Corrosion: A redox reaction where metals oxidize, returning to their natural oxidation states.

Electrochemistry - A Special Case of Redox Reactions

In electrochemistry, electron movement is directed through conductors to produce energy or drive chemical changes. The standard reduction potential table helps predict electron transfer potential.

Electrochemical Cells

These cells either generate electricity from chemical reactions (spontaneous) or use electricity to drive non-spontaneous chemical reactions.

Galvanic (Voltaic) Cells:
- Produce electrical energy from spontaneous, exothermic redox reactions.
- Composed of two half-cells in separate containers, connected by a salt bridge.
- Electrons flow from anode to cathode in an external circuit.
Electrolytic Cells:
- Consume electrical energy to force non-spontaneous, endothermic redox reactions.
- Both electrodes are typically in the same solution or molten electrolyte.
- Electrons are supplied by an external power source.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the decomposition of compounds using electric current. Examples include breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen, or isolating sodium and chlorine from molten NaCl. It is used commercially for producing elements like magnesium and aluminum.

Electrodes: Anodes and Cathodes

An electrode is a conductor that contacts a non-metallic part of a circuit.
The anode is where oxidation occurs; it's the negative electrode in a galvanic cell and the positive in an electrolytic cell.
The cathode is where reduction occurs; it's the positive electrode in a galvanic cell and the negative in an electrolytic cell.
The electrode with the highest reduction potential acts as the cathode, and the one with the lowest acts as the anode.

Cell Notation

Cell notation is a shorthand for electrochemical cells: anode | anode electrolyte || cathode electrolyte | cathode. Single bars (|) denote phase boundaries, and double bars (||) represent a salt bridge.

Standard Reduction Potential Table

This table helps predict if a reaction is spontaneous. If a cell is non-spontaneous, it requires electricity and is an electrolytic cell.

Applications of Electrolytic Cells

Electroplating: Coating a metal object (cathode) with a thin layer of another metal (from the anode) for protection or aesthetics, e.g., silver-plating a spoon.
Refining of Copper: Impure copper acts as the anode, oxidizing to Cu²⁺ ions, which then reduce at the pure copper cathode, increasing its mass.
Extraction of Aluminium: Aluminium oxide (alumina) is dissolved in molten cryolite and electrolyzed. Carbon anodes are consumed, producing CO₂. This process is energy-intensive.

Environmental Impact of Aluminium Extraction

Aluminium extraction has significant environmental impacts, including landscape destruction, disposal of toxic red mud, greenhouse gas emissions from burning carbon anodes, release of poisonous fluorine compounds, and pollution from power generation.
