3.1 Internal Structure of an Atom

An atom is defined as a very small particle that serves as the fundamental building block of matter. Within the atom, there are three primary subatomic particles: electrons, protons, and neutrons. 3.2 Atomic Number and Mass Number

The atomic number (represented as Z) is defined as the total number of protons present in the nucleus of an atom, which also determines the element's identity. The mass number (denoted as A), on the other hand, is the sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. When written in standard notation, such as ₁₁²³Na, the mass number appears at the top left and the atomic number at the bottom left of the elemental symbol.

3.3 Isotopes and Atomic Masses

Isotopes are variations of a single element that have the same number of protons and electrons but differ in the number of neutrons. As a result, these isotopes will generally exhibit nearly identical chemical properties, as these properties are primarily determined by electrons. However, the differing numbers of neutrons result in a variance in physical properties since they alter the atoms' mass. Natural elements often exist as mixtures of various isotopes, each contributing to the overall atomic mass. For example, carbon has isotopes including ₆¹²C, ₆¹³C, and ₆¹⁴C with respective natural abundances of 98.89%, 1.11%, and <0.01%.

The average atomic mass of an element can be calculated by multiplying the mass of each isotope by its relative abundance and summing these values. For carbon, the calculation leads to an average atomic mass of 12.01 amu.

3.4 The Periodic Law and the Periodic Table

The Periodic Law states that when elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, elements with similar chemical properties occur at periodic intervals. This periodicity is captured and organized in the Periodic Table, which arranges elements in ascending order of their atomic number. The Periodic Table features horizontal rows known as periods and vertical columns called groups; elements within the same group exhibit similar chemical behaviors.

3.6 Electron Arrangements Within Atoms

Electrons in an atom are arranged in defined regions around the nucleus known as electron shells. Each shell contains electrons with similar energy levels, with the closest shell to the nucleus being the lowest in energy. Within these shells, electrons are further divided into subshells, categorized as s, p, d, and f, each capable of holding a specific number of electrons:

s subshell: 2 electrons
p subshell: 6 electrons
d subshell: 10 electrons
f subshell: 14 electrons

Furthermore, these subshells contain orbitals, each accommodating a maximum of 2 electrons with opposite spins. The arrangement of electrons is crucial in determining the atom's reactive properties.

3.7 Electron Configurations and Orbital Diagrams

Electron configurations provide a systematic way to describe the arrangement of electrons in an atom. The arrangement is established by filling electrons into subshells according to several foundational rules:

Electron subshells are filled in the order of increasing energy.
Electrons occupy atomic orbitals singly before pairing.
A maximum of two electrons per orbital is permitted, with opposite spins.

For example, the electron configuration for oxygen can be represented as 1s² 2s² 2p⁴, detailing how many electrons occupy each subshell.

3.8 The Electronic Basis for the Periodic Law and the Periodic Table

Understanding the electron arrangement within atoms provides insight into the periodic law. Elements within the same group share similar electron configurations in their outermost energy levels, which leads to similar chemical properties. For instance, the alkali metals, which are located in Group 1A, all exhibit similar behaviors in chemical reactions due to their single electron in the outer shell.

3.9 Classification of the Elements

Elements can be classified through two primary systems based on either selected physical properties or their electron configurations. The first system separates elements as metals or nonmetals, while the second classifies them as noble gases, representative elements, transition elements, or inner transition elements. This classification helps in systematically understanding and predicting the properties and behaviors of different elements.
