Chapter 5 – Forces

5.1 Forces and Their Interactions

In physics, understanding forces is crucial for analyzing how objects interact and move. A force is defined as a push or a pull resulting from the interaction between two objects. Forces are categorized into two main types: contact forces and non-contact forces.

Contact Forces: These forces occur when objects are in physical contact. Examples include:

Friction: The resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
Air Resistance: The frictional force air exerts against a moving object.
Tension: The force exerted through a string, rope, or wire when it is pulled tight by forces acting at each end.
Normal Contact Force: The support force exerted upon an object that is in contact with another stable object.

Non-Contact Forces: These forces act at a distance, without physical contact. Examples include:

Gravitational Force: The attractive force between two masses.
Electrostatic Force: The force between charged objects.
Magnetic Force: The force exerted by magnets on other magnets or magnetic materials.

5.1.2 Scalar and Vector Quantities

Quantities are classified into scalar and vector forms:

Scalar Quantities: These have magnitude but no direction. For example, speed and mass.
Vector Quantities: These have both magnitude and direction, illustrated by arrows: the length indicates magnitude, while the arrow points in the direction of the quantity. Force, velocity, and displacement are vector quantities.

5.1.3 Gravity

Gravity is a non-contact force pulling objects towards one another. Weight, which is the force of gravity acting on an object, depends on its mass and the gravitational field strength:

Weight (N) = mass (kg) x gravitational field strength (N/kg)

Weight can be measured using a Newton meter. The center of mass of an object is a pivotal point where its weight is effectively concentrated. This can be determined by hanging the object from different points and observing where the lines intersect.

5.1.4 Resultant Force

The resultant force is the net effect of all forces acting on an object, represented through free body diagrams. These diagrams can show how a single force can be broken into two components at right angles, which together produce the same effect as the original force.

Work Done and Energy Transfer

5.2 Work Done

Work is defined as the activity done when a force results in the movement of an object over a distance:

Work done (J) = force (N) x distance (m)

One joule is the amount of work done when a force of one newton moves an object one meter. Work against friction results in an increase in temperature of the affected object.

5.3 Forces and Elasticity

The extension of elastic objects, such as springs, is directly proportional to the force applied to them until the limit of proportionality is exceeded:

Force (N) = spring constant (N/m) x extension (m)

Elastic deformation is reversible when the force is removed, while inelastic deformation is permanent. When changing the shape of an object through stretching or compressing, multiple forces may be required. Energy stored in an elastic object is called elastic potential energy, and can be equated to the work done on it if it remains within the elastic limit.

5.4 Moments, Levers, and Gears

A moment refers to the turning effect of a force:

Moment of a force (Nm) = force (N) x distance (m)

To be balanced, the total clockwise moments about a pivot must equal the total anticlockwise moments. Levers act as force multipliers by increasing the distance from the pivot, hence increasing the moment. Gears also transmit rotational effects, with low gear providing greater turning effect at lower speeds, and high gear enabling higher speeds with less turning effect.

5.5 Pressure and Pressure Differences in Fluids

Pressure in fluids is the force per unit area exerted on surfaces. It can be described mathematically:

Pressure (Pa) = force normal to surface (N) / area of surface (m²)

As the height of a fluid column increases, so does the weight, thus creating higher pressure. Upthrust refers to an upward force on submerged objects, influenced by factors such as shape and density. Atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude due to the reduction in the number of air molecules above a surface.

5.6 Forces and Motion

5.6.1 Describing Motion along a Line

Distance refers to the extent of space covered, while displacement measures the straight line distance from start to finish. Speed is a scalar quantity, while velocity is a vector quantity, taking direction into account. Common speeds include:

Walking: ~1.5 m/s
Running: ~3 m/s
Cycling: ~6 m/s
Car: ~20 m/s
Train: ~56 m/s
Plane: ~250 m/s
Sound: ~330 m/s

5.6.2 Acceleration

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity over time. A positive acceleration means an increase in speed, while negative acceleration (deceleration) indicates a reduction in speed:

Acceleration (m/s²) = change in velocity (m/s) / time (s)

The uniform acceleration can be determined from the gradient of velocity-time graphs, with free-falling objects accelerating at 9.8 m/s² near due to gravity.

5.7 Momentum

Momentum is a measure of the motion of an object:

Momentum (kg m/s) = mass (kg) x velocity (m/s)

The law of conservation of momentum states that in a closed system, total momentum remains constant before and after events. Changes in momentum result from applied forces, leading to safety features designed to extend impact time and reduce force on occupants during collisions.

6.1 Waves in Air, Fluids, and Solids

Waves are disturbances that transfer energy without transferring matter. Two main types of waves exist:

Transverse Waves: These have oscillations perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Examples include ripples on water.
Longitudinal Waves: These have oscillations parallel to the direction of energy transfer, such as sound waves.

6.2 Properties of Waves

The properties of waves include:

Amplitude: The maximum displacement from rest position.
Wavelength: The distance over which the wave's shape repeats.
Frequency: The number of waves passing a point per second.

The speed of a wave is calculated using:

Wave Speed (m/s) = frequency (Hz) x wavelength (m)

6.3 Reflection of Waves

Waves can reflect, absorb, or transmit when they encounter a boundary between materials. The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.

7.1 Magnetic Forces and Fields

Magnets have poles where magnetic forces are strongest. Like poles repel, while unlike poles attract. Permanent magnets generate their field, while induced magnets respond to an external magnetic field. The direction of magnetic field lines goes from north to south.

7.2 The Motor Effect

The motor effect occurs when a current-carrying conductor is placed within a magnetic field, leading to a force acting on the conductor. The force depends on the current, magnetic flux density, and length of the conductor:

Force (N) = magnetic flux density (T) x current (A) x length (m)

7.3 Induced Potential and Transformers

The generator effect indicates that movement within a magnetic field induces an electromotive force (emf) in a conductor. This is the principle behind devices like alternators and transformers.

Chapter 8 – Space Physics

8.1 Our Solar System

The solar system consists of the Sun, eight planets, dwarf planets, and natural satellites. Stars form from nebulae due to gravitational attraction, leading to nuclear fusion as the temperature increases within the core.

8.2 The Life Cycle of Stars

The life cycle of a star is determined by its mass. Stars the size of the Sun evolve into red giants and eventually white dwarfs as they exhaust their nuclear fuel. Larger stars undergo more dramatic changes, leading to supernovae.

8.3 Orbital Motion

Gravity enables planets and satellites to maintain orbits. The concept of stable orbits helps explain satellite movements, including geostationary and low polar orbits used for communications and monitoring.

8.4 Red-Shift

Red-shift indicates the movement of galaxies away from the Earth, supporting the theory that the universe is expanding and providing evidence for the Big Bang Theory.
