The cells of multicellular organisms are intricately connected through an elaborate circulatory system. In humans, this system functions similarly to a rapid river of blood that transports essential materials, nutrients, and oxygen to each cell, while also facilitating the removal of waste products like carbon dioxide. This circulatory system is classified as a closed system, meaning that blood remains confined to vessels and does not fill body cavities.

The human circulatory system comprises three primary components:

A pumping heart
Blood
Blood vessels

This study will delve into the structure and function of the human circulatory system, including diagnostic measurements such as pulse rate and blood pressure.

Heart Structure and Function

The heart is a muscular organ weighing between 200-400 grams (approximately 7-15 ounces) and is slightly larger than a person's fist. On average, a human heart beats about 100,000 times daily, pumping roughly 7,570 liters (approximately 2,000 gallons) of blood. The human heart consists of four chambers:

Left Atrium
Right Atrium
Left Ventricle
Right Ventricle

These chambers are separated by one-way valves, which assist in regulating blood flow.

The heart's left and right sides are divided by a structure called the septum, preventing the mixing of oxygen-poor blood with oxygen-rich blood.

Path of Blood Flow

Understanding the trajectory of blood flow through the mammalian heart is critical:

Oxygen-poor blood from the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava enters the right atrium.
The right atrium pumps blood through the right atrioventricular (tricuspid) valve into the right ventricle.
The right ventricle ejects blood through the pulmonary semilunar valve into the pulmonary trunk, which divides into the two pulmonary arteries leading to the lungs.
Oxygen-rich blood returns from the lungs via four pulmonary veins into the left atrium.
The left atrium sends blood through the left atrioventricular (bicuspid or mitral) valve into the left ventricle.
The left ventricle pumps blood through the aortic semilunar valve into the aorta, distributing it throughout the body.

The human heart, on average weighing around 300 grams, is significantly lighter than the liver but heavier than many smaller organs. Comparatively, a lion's heart weighs about 750 grams while a sparrow's heart is merely 0.4 grams.

The extensive network of veins, arteries, and capillaries in the human body, totaling more than 60,000 miles in length, could wrap around the Earth over 2.5 times. The human body generates more than 100 billion red blood cells daily, with a typical lifespan of about 120 days. In contrast, cells lining the stomach and small intestine survive for only around 2 days, while liver cells last about 15 days.

Blood

Blood, classified as a type of connective tissue, consists of approximately 55% plasma, a yellowish fluid, in which cells are suspended. These cells include:

Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes): Biconcave disks measuring 7-8 micrometers in diameter. There are about 250,000 erythrocytes per drop of blood, which are produced by red bone marrow.
White Blood Cells (Leukocytes): Larger than erythrocytes, stained bluish-purple, also produced by red bone marrow.

Using a microscope to observe prepared slides can help visualize blood components, particularly erythrocytes and leukocytes.

Blood Vessels

Blood vessels are classified into three main types:

Arteries: Carry blood away from the heart and consist of four concentric layers:

Outer layer of connective tissue
Middle layer of smooth muscle
Elastic layer
Inner layer of epithelial cells

Capillaries: Connect arteries and veins with diameters slightly larger than that of a single red blood cell. Collectively, they form an elaborate network that spans approximately 97,000 kilometers, creating a total surface area greater than three tennis courts. All body cells are located within 100 micrometers of a capillary.
Veins: Return blood to the heart.

Pulse and Blood Pressure

The heart's average lifetime beats total around 2.5 billion. Each heartbeat propels blood into arteries, generating pressure waves known as pulses. The pulse rate, which indicates heart contractions per minute, typically ranges from 65 to 80; well-conditioned athletes may have rates as low as 40. Arteries are strategically placed throughout the body, making them convenient for pulse measurement.

Blood pressure describes the force exerted by circulating blood on blood vessel surfaces. This pressure is measured using two metrics:

Systolic Pressure: The pressure during heart contractions.
Diastolic Pressure: The pressure when the heart is at rest between beats.

Blood pressure is expressed in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), indicating the height to which mercury is raised by pressure. The average blood pressure ranges from 120/80 mm Hg. Factors affecting blood pressure include salt intake, blood volume, age, and blood vessel elasticity.

Blood pressure is measured using a sphygmomanometer, which applies pressure to the brachial artery as a cuff around the arm is inflated and slowly deflated while listening for the return of blood flow with a stethoscope.

Venous Blood Pressure

Blood pressure in veins is lower than in arteries, resulting in slow blood movement. One-way valves in veins prevent the backflow of blood due to low pressure.

Blood Pressure and Health

Normal resting blood pressure is crucial for health, with optimal levels being systolic pressures below 120 mm Hg and diastolic pressures below 80 mm Hg. Prehypertension is characterized by systolic pressures between 120 and 129 mm Hg, while hypertension occurs when systolic pressures exceed 129 mm Hg and/or diastolic pressures exceed 90 mm Hg.

Hypertension, affecting around 50 million Americans, is often termed the "silent killer" due to its lack of symptoms. Untreated hypertension can lead to severe health issues, including stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage. Contributing factors include smoking, obesity, stress, and poor diet, while exercise can lower blood pressure.

Common Cardiovascular Disorders

Anemia

Anemia signifies a reduction in blood's oxygen-carrying capability, potentially due to small red blood cells or low hemoglobin levels. Iron deficiency is a frequent cause, while sickle cell disease represents an inherited form of anemia.

Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is the buildup of fatty deposits within coronary arteries, which reduces blood flow to the heart muscle, leading to hardening of the arteries.

Heart Attack

Heart attacks occur when blocked blood flow in coronary arteries leads to part of the myocardium (heart muscle) dying. Treatments often involve bypass surgery to reroute blood around the blockage.

Arrhythmia

Arrhythmias refer to irregular heartbeats that can range from transient flutters to life-threatening conditions like ventricular fibrillation, which can lead to sudden cardiac arrest.

Aneurysm

Weakness in arterial walls from atherosclerosis can cause an aneurysm, a pulsating, enlarging sac that can result in significant blood loss if it ruptures.

The Effects of Smoking on Cardiovascular Health

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death, damaging lung function and increasing the risk of heart disease. Nicotine elevates heart rate and blood pressure, damages blood vessels, and promotes blood clot formation, leading to higher stroke risk.
